Det er med stor sorg vi meddeler at Professor Signe Howell gikk bort den 26. januar. Vi har mistet en betydningsfull skikkelse, et lysende sinn og et varmt hjerte som har belyst veien innen sosialantropologi, både ved Universitetet i Oslo siden 1987 og i internasjonale fagmiljøer.
Fra hennes tidlige reiseeventyr, gjennom banebrytende feltarbeid med Chewong-folket i Malaysias regnskoger, til hennes avantgardistiske perspektiver på moral og slektskap, var Signe Howell en pioner, en teoretiker, en antropolog som vil fortsette å inspirere.
Så sent som 13. november 2023 var hun med oss på SAPUs diskusjonspub, hvor hun levende delte sine erfaringer fra feltarbeid sammen med Dr. Ståle Wig, og fanget studentene med sine historier, innsikt og lidenskap.
Våre tanker går til Signe Howells familie, venner og alle i vårt akademiske fellesskap som kjenner tomrommet etter henne. Hennes arv er ikke bare innegravert i akademisk litteratur, men også i minnene og den fortsatte utforskningen av dem hun har inspirert.
Takk, professor Howell, for alt du har lært oss, for din ildsjel og visdom. Vi vil hedre din nysgjerrighet og ditt engasjement ved å bære videre den ånden du viste oss. Du vil bli dypt savnet.

In Memory of Professor Signe Howell
It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Professor Signe Howell on January 26th. We have lost an influential figure, a brilliant mind and warm heart that illuminated the path of social anthropology, both at the University of Oslo since 1987 and in international communities.
From her early years of adventurous travel, through groundbreaking fieldwork with the Chewong in the rainforests of Malaysia and the social structures on Flores, to her forward-thinking stances on moralities and kinship, Signe Howell was a pioneer, a theorist, an anthropologist who will continue to inspire.
As recently as November 13th, 2023, she joined us at SAPU’s diskupils event, vividly sharing fieldwork experiences alongside Dr. Ståle Wig, captivating students with her stories, insights and passion.
Our thoughts are with Signe Howell’s family, friends, and all within our academic community who feel the void of her absence. Her legacy is inscribed not only in scholarly literature but also in the memories and continued exploration of those she has inspired.
Thank you, professor Howell, for everything you taught us, for your spirit and wisdom. We will honor your curiosity and commitment by carrying on the spirit you showed us. You will be deeply missed.
